Welcome to my Mini-reviews! Though I would want to devote myself to going all-in with every book, I can't. But because I love books, and I love analyzing them, I wanted to make a smaller excerpt of what I think would be this book in a nutshell. Without further ado, let's dive in!
This book was a pleasant surprise for me.
Or more than that, I’d say!
Having come from a bleak experience with books so far, I was thrilled to see how this book intertwined characters and plotlines in a way that left me eager. I fell for the characters, connected with them, marveled at the intricate plots, enjoyed the romantic fragments spluttered across, and saw myself admiring snippets of writing throughout.
Though I can’t argue to the positives or negatives of the entire story, I found that the few I saw developing, were carefully thought out. Some as critic views on particular subjects, and some on ideas to be promoted—which I instantly loved.
…At least of what I imagine them to be going toward.
In whatever case though, I think this book has a critical outlook on poverty, power, and basically what humans are capable of when exposed to difficult situations, without it all being a grimdark experience.
Spoiler: I may be saying it because of how, in the end, people get punished for the good deeds they accomplish, not concerned with the politics that lie behind every word/action they make, thus suffering for not doing so.
There is also how the different social classes work, how slavery is introduced to the mix, and how well the territory is thought out so that resources or market routes affect both politics and economics, and how those two are the concern of society as a whole. End of spoiler.
In other words, the book feels real.
The negatives?
I guess I should mention that this is the author’s debut, so perhaps the writing on it isn’t as amazing as others I’ve seen, but it’s still good. And maybe there are some pacing issues around, but I wasn’t too distracted by them.
So… if you’re wondering what to pick next, pick this one!
In summary:
Was it Good? ✔
Was it Critical? ✔
Did it Challenge norms? I don´t know yet!
