Mini Review |The Shadows Between Us

Updated: Dec 14, 2021

Welcome to my Mini-reviews! Though I would want to devote myself to going all-in with every book, I can't. But because I love books, and I love analyzing them, I wanted to make a smaller excerpt of what I think would be this book in a nutshell. Without further ado, let's dive in!

This book was a guilty pleasure for me.

It was good in almost every single aspect; characters were charming, the plot was fast-paced, the romance top-notch, the writing was fitting...

My only problem:

How ideas like violence and power were elevated into good things. Or at least, that was my impression of it. Sure, there were progressive ideas thrown into the mix—which is always good—, but I couldn't tell if this was meant to be a critical perspective of things or an ode to the dark side of what having power means.

Spoiler: I say this because The Shadow King's ways to deal with trouble are more violent-focused ones than a slightly more comprehensive approach centered on dialogue. Add no remorse, and the determination to kill the Robin Hood of the story, and you get the idea. A king treating its people this way means he likes power over pretty much anything else. End of spoiler.

...Which kinda sucks.

The positive?

Well, it does imply that love conquers all. While I think love isn't the entire answer to everything, it's still something I like reading about, hence my pleasure part of the title.

Do read it if you want a fast-paced, slow-burn romance!

In summary:

Was it Good? ✔️

Was it Critical? ❌

Did it Challenge norms? ❌
